Become a CityWrite Volunteer!

Want to volunteer for the 2013 CityWrite?  CityWrite will run an entire week this year, from October 14-20, and expand to 50 sites throughout Indianapolis.  To accomplish this, we’ll need lots of people to help out in facilitating CityWrite sessions.  What does facilitating a CityWrite site entail? You’ll help guide people through writing down their stories, memories, and opinions by leading attendees through a few suggested writing prompts and exercises.  It’s okay if you’ve no prior experience teaching or tutoring– CityWrite sessions aren’t supposed to be like an English class.  They are supposed to be about starting conversations, sharing stories, and reinforcing the belief that everyone has a story to tell and telling it will benefit everyone.  To do this, we need people from all walks of life to not only participate in writing their stories down, but to also encourage others in showing them how to approach memoir writing.

And don’t worry– we’ll train you!  Also, most sessions will be staffed by two facilitators, so you’ll never be alone.  CityWrite sessions typically last 1-2hrs and require attending a 90 minute training session.

In addition to the public literacy training you’ll receive, you’ll also walk away from your experience with a lot of stories to tell.  Volunteers will also receive a copy of the upcoming CityWrite printed anthology and an invitation to a volunteer after-party.

CityWrite 2013 Call For Participants!

Big news everyone!  We’re planning the next CityWrite and we need your help.  CityWrite will take place in Indianapolis from October 14-20 in conjunction with The National Day on Writing.  The first CityWrite was a tremendous success and hundreds of people joined together at a CityWrite site to write down their stories and memories.  We invite everyone to participate in the upcoming CityWrite and read through the Call for Participants below.  However, here are a few key highlights:

  • While most CityWrite sites will operate simultaneously during the weekend of the National Day on Writing, we’re also opening up participation throughout the week leading up to the National Day on Writing. This will allow more flexibility for organizations and groups to host a writing site and encourage greater participation from schools and community groups.
  • Our goal for 2013 is to host 50 CityWrite sites and reach 500 participants.
  • Of course, the biggest writing project in Indianapolis is going to need a lot of people to help make it happen. We’ll need 100 volunteers. That’s a big number!  Interested in volunteering for CityWrite?
  • We’ll be hosting an organizational meeting on Tuesday, July 16th from 6-8pm at Marian University in Marian Hall 206. Anyone interested in assisting in the organization and planning of CityWrite is invited to attend. RSVP by sending your name to Mark Latta (mlatta AT marian.edu).
  • In early 2014, we’ll be publishing a CityWrite anthology featuring writing from the 2012 and 2013 CityWrite.

Stay tuned for more information!

2012 CityWrite is in the Bag!

Thanks to everyone who came out to participate in CityWrite.  We’re tallying the current number of people who participated across Indianapolis to celebrate the Indianapolis Day on Writing, but our volunteers and site facilitators collected hundreds of written memoirs and personal narratives.

We’re currently working on archiving each writing.  Stay tuned.
